July 29th Actions Opposing SB1070 Across the Country

From the East to the West Coast, people of faith took action on July 29th, 2010 against Arizona's anti-immigration law SB1070.

In New York City, a prayer vigil was held at Judson Memorial Church.Then thousands marched across the Brooklyn Bridge to a rally in Foley Square in Manhattan. In upstate New York, the Baptist Peace Fellowship organized a solidarity event during their annual conference.

Faith Vigils Planned for July 29, 2010 in response to Arizona SB1070 Going Into Effect

Faith coalitions around the United States are planning vigils for immigration reform on July 29, 2010. This is the date that the Arizona law SB1070 is planned to go into effect, despite lawsuits from the Department of Justice, ACLU, Mexican American Legal Defense & Education Fund, Tucson police officer Martin Escobar, and the National Coalition of Latino Clergy and Christian Leaders. The law has been condemned by religious bodies around the world.

Milwaukee New Sanctuary Movement Exposes Sheriff's Dept & ICE Impact on Families

The Milwaukee New Sanctuary Movement and Voces de la Frontera in collaboration with other community leaders obtained a place on the agenda of the Milwaukee County Board's Judiciary, Safety, and General Services Committee Meeting on Thursday, July 15th. The issue was the collaboration between the Milwaukee County Sheriff's Department and the ICE.

Philadelphia is expected to end the arrangement that permits federal immigration agents to scrutinize the city's computerized list of arrests, including country of origin and other data, Everett Gillison, the deputy mayor for public safety, said Sunday.

New Sanctuary Movement Supports Immigrant Rights in Arizona

The national new sanctuary movement supported the national day of action against SB1070, with a nonviolent protest and six mile march to the Arizona Capitol on May 29, 2010 in Phoenix. We support all the local coalitions of the national new sanctuary movement who sent people to join the 100,000 person march in Phoenix and planned solidarity rallies in their own communities.

Asylum Granted to Portland Immigrant

Marita (her name is changed at her request) was arrested and detained in Portland, OR during the Del Monte Plant raid in 2007. After numerous court hearings, she was granted asylum on March 30 of this year.

Marita is the first of the women being accompanied by the Oregon New Sanctuary Members to receive asylum. Several others are waiting for their cases to be finalized.

Religious Leaders in Chicago Arrested for Civil Disobedience Against SB 1070

In Chicago, people responded to immigrant rights crisis in Arizona, demanding President Obama and Congress take deliberate legislative action to stop separation of families. Twenty four religious leaders, labor activists, and students were arrested protesting immigration policy as about 300 Chicagoans protested SB 1070 and Obama's lack of action.
